Legislative Events

Lots going on in the world of reading and reading intervention at the state level! In Massachusetts where we have the nation’s best school system, 53% of 3rd graders are not reading at grade level. Currently, there are several bills before the Massachusetts state legislature regarding early identification of and intervention for dyslexia a common and treatable learning disability that is woefully mistreated in our public schools. On Thursday, February 8, I attended briefings for the Early Literacy Act which would establish a new early literacy grant program for school districts that would create grants to help school districts find, screen and intervene with K-5 students having trouble reading. We heard from members of the public, and experts in the field. It was a moving and inspiring event.
